Protects Flat-Tappet Cams
The lifters and cam lobes on flat-tappet camshafts common to classic and high performance vehicles slide rapidly against one another, producing high friction and heat. The friction between the two components can eventually wear down the cam and affect valve operation, ultimately resulting in lost engine power and reduced efficiency. In addition, these areas are splash-lubricated rather than pressure lubricated like other areas of the engine, which adds extra strain on anti-wear additives like the zinc and phosphorus in zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP).

AMSOIL Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil is formulated with high levels of ZDDP to protect flat-tappet cams, lifters, rockers and other areas susceptible to wear. Its high-zinc, high-phosphorus formulation provides the extra wear protection these critical splash-lubricated components require.
Provides Long-Term Protection from Rust & Corrosion
AMSOIL Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil is formulated with a unique blend of rust and corrosion inhibitors to ensure maximum protection during long-term storage. To prove its effectiveness, AMSOIL submitted Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil to the Standard Test Method for Rust Protection in the Humidity Cabinet (ASTM D-1748). This test evaluates the rust-preventative properties of oil under high-humidity conditions, similar to those faced by a covered hot rod in a damp garage. The metal coupon treated with AMSOIL Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil showed no signs of oxidation after 192 hours, while the coupon treated with a leading competitor’s product failed the test after 24 hours.
ZROD APPLICATIONS
AMSOIL Z-ROD 10w-30 Synthetic Motor Oil is recommended for older or modified engines requiring 10W-30, 10W-40 or 20W-50 motor oil. Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil meets API SL and earlier specifications, allowing for increased levels of anti-wear additives. ZDDP levels in Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil exceed the limits of API SM and newer specifications but big deal.
Lubricant Compatibility
AMSOIL Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oils are compatible with conventional and other synthetic motor oils. Mixing AMSOIL Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oils with other oils, however, will shorten the oil’s life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oils.
Service Life
Because engines in classic cars, hot rods and other performance vehicles are generally modified, a universal oil drain interval recommendation for these applications cannot be given. Responsibility for determining the drain interval duration rests with the owner. As a general service guideline, the maximum drain interval for Z-ROD Synthetic Motor Oil should not exceed 5,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. In heavily modified engines (e.g. forced induction, nitrous) the maximum drain interval should not exceed 3,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
This product is not expected to cause health concerns when used for the intended application and according to the recommendations in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). An MSDS is available via the Internet at www.amsoil.com or upon request at (715) 392-7101. Keep Out of Reach of Children. Don’t pollute. Return used oil to collection centers.

Z-ROD motor oil

In the early days when I was building custom cars and street rods there weren’t roller camshafts so the oil had ingredients to protect flat tappet camshafts, along came Catalytic converters so oil companies removed the Zinc & Phosphorus from their oil as they destroyed Catalytic Converters!!!!!! Most all classic cars restored don’t have a Catalytic Converter, but need an oil with Zink & Phosphorus to protect there camshafts during break-in and after that as well!!! Z-Rod has these ingredients in it!!!!!
(Webmasters note – actually extending intervals or not changing as often as your 3000 mile interval will not harm the catalytic converters. All the Phosphorous that burns off attacking the converter occurs within the first 300 miles of the oil so 1-change a year or 2 years isn’t enough to cause harm. )
Using this for the winter storage months

I decided to use this for the winter storage months. Will be using the AMSOIL regular synthetic for the warmer driving months.
What’s in your oil?
By LOUIS, a Verified Buyer from Longwood, FL on December 27, 2023
I’m amazed at how many car guys still don’t know this. Conventional motor oil formulation has changed alot over the years. Do you wonder why your performance flat tappet is history? It’s not the cam. The high pressure scrub requires ZINC to keep from murdering your valve train components. Specifically camshafts and valve lifters. That’s why we use Z-Rod in all of our non-roller profile applications !!
Muscle Car Motor Oil

I have a numbers matching 1969 Chevy Nova with a 396 CID engine with 375HP. That motor from the factory has solid lifters. Since car manufacturers stopped using solid lifters over 40 years ago the motor oils available today don’t have enough Zinc Phosphorous to properly lubricate that kind of engine. My car is a street car, not a race car, and Z-Rod fills the bill for that better than any other oil I have found.
The only oil that quiets 1.6L Miata lifters
By DAVE, a Verified Buyer from Massachusetts on November 27, 2023
Listen, I own a summer/track HPDE 1.6L Miata. I tried all the major brands of oil. The harder I drove, the louder the lifters would get. Even driving on the interstate. About 10 years ago I went to the PRI show in Indy. And had a nice conversation at the Amsoil booth with a very knowledgeable gentleman, explaining my situation. Since this car is driven hard and at high RPM, he suggested Z-ROD. Quieted it right down. No more lifter noise, even at startup. The oil analysis always come back great. Very low wear numbers. I could not be happier with Z-ROD 10W-30 in the Miata. Still on the original lifters. As far as I am concerned, noise equals wear. Where all the majors failed to quiet it down Z-ROD did the job. I will never use anything else in it.
Corvairs love it
By Greenbrier , a Verified Buyer from NC on July 29, 2023
I’ve tired quite a few different oils in my Corvair engine and this is the one it likes best. Just did 1200 miles on the HotRod Powertour and she didn’t burn a drop. The engine is a 110HP air cooled flat six out of a Monza 900. I run it in a Greenbrier. You have a Corvair? Try ZRod 10-30 and see for yourself. Peace
