Leading the Field in Deposit Protection

AMSOIL Leads in Performance

Testing proves AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil provides more complete protection against damaging deposits than competitors.

The push toward smaller, fuel-efficient engines yielding more power drives the development of key technologies. Gasoline direct injection (GDI) and turbochargers are here to stay. By 2020, industry experts predict that nearly every new vehicle will feature GDI technology. Consequently the majority of these are yielding turbochargers. As these advances enhance performance, they also present serious challenges to motor oil. Due to heat and new (and upcoming) requirements for modern oil technology, harmful engine deposits are more likely to be detrimental.

Admin Notes:

The below information is even more critical for GDI engines than Turbo only equipped motors. I’ve often said if you have a GDI engine you can’t afford NOT to USE AMSOIL!! The nature of the PCV contamination will ultimately degrade efficiency with the so called “Fully Synthetic” oils. As you will see, AMSOIL’s 100% synthetic Signature Series offers the best value proposal. So have no fear, life can be added to these highly efficient engines.

The Turbocharger Trade-Off

Turbochargers push more air into the engine’s combustion chamber, providing better fuel-economy and performance but also creating intense engine temperatures. They often operate above 150,000 rpm on exhaust gases exceeding 1000°F. These extreme conditions cause some motor oils to break down and solidify into harmful deposits.

Your owners manual maintenance section will generally list both “Severe” and “Normal” service intervals based on vehicle use. Therefore cars with turbochargers will always fall within the severe category due to the extreme heat they generate. That said, the motor oil selection needs to be well thought out and researched to combat the legacy of increased deposits and decreased engine life. Have no fear! This can be totally offset with a superior synthetic oil.

Proof of Protection

AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil was tested against two competing brands to determine its level of protection against deposit formation in high-heat applications.

Oil atomization causes deposits due to low quality oil brandsThe TEOST 33C test (ASTM D6335) is an industry-standard bench test that simulates turbocharger operating conditions.

What is the test designed to do?

According to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), it predicts the high temperature deposit forming tendency of an engine oil.” Must meet the API SN Resource Conserving and ILSAC GF-5 motor oil specifications. These are often recommended by vehicle manufacturers. A 5W-30 motor oil must limit total deposit formation to 30 mg or less. Marketing giants know very few will have the opportunity to understand this information so big sales and profits result from lower cost and quality base stocks will continue.

Results

AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil held the total weight of deposits to 7 mg, well under the 30 mg limit required by the API and ILSAC. Royal Purple?? LOL. Their API 5W-30 and Mobil1’s® Extended Performance 5W-30 came in just under the radar at 25.4 mg and 28.2 mg respectively. How did AMSOIL’s Signature Series 5W-30 do? It protected against harmful deposits on turbochargers 4X better than Mobil1® Extended Performance. It scored 3.6X better than Calumet’s Royal Purple®. *

*Based on independent, third-party testing. Tests consisted of AMSOIL® Signature Series 5W-30, Mobil1® Extended Performance 5W-30 and Royal Purple® API 5W-30.  Test:  ASTM D6335 bench test required by the API SN Resource Conserving specification.

Test results represent the formulations available as of April 2016. Formulations are coded to eliminate bias during testing so samples can be tested in random order. An appropriate number of trials of each oil were run to produce results at or above the 95 percent confidence level. (When compared to AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil.)
