Finding Extra Money To Fund Your Ride

five-window-chevy-pickupIn millions of garages, driveways and some front yards across the North America, there are restoration projects in various stages of completion. Each car, truck or bike has its own backstory – as do their owners. To varying degrees each owner has a personal vision for the project, some idea of the costs and a source of extra money to fund the project.

Upgrading your vehicle takes extra cash

Like any project there are delays due to obstacles, such as lack of funding. Making upgrades and modifications to a vehicle tends to have a chain reaction. Upgrading one component to increase horsepower kicks off the need for other upgrades to ensure the added horsepower is optimized. Or, making one upgrade in the bodywork or paint often highlights defects that detract from the upgrade and call into question your skill or the integrity of your work. And so the vicious cycle begins.

Personally I never focus on adding power but reliability (on my Corvairs)  – from that indirectly you may gain horsepower but things such as switching to a electric fuel pump, spare carburetor(s), aftermarket fuel injection, 4-speed manual to 5-speed, air dams, sway bars, disc brakes, shoulder belts and some at the top of my list.

“It’s me or that *?@%! car!”

In many cases key stakeholders in these projects (spouses and significant others) fail to share the owner’s passion or vision for the project. As a result, many restoration projects are complicated due to lack of support. Some are canceled or delayed indefinably due to the all-too-common ultimatum: “It’s me or that *?@%! car!”

Unless you’re wealthy or a professional builder, finding the extra money to support completing restorations or modifications is challenging, which can result in relationship tensions and hand-wringing or guilt about making financial trade-offs. Getting a second or third part-time job is the route some enthusiasts take to complete their project. Scheduling issues and the stress of working a job you’re not that committed to can be a grind, to say the least.
